Say NO to TOBACCO

“Tobacco is a filthy weed
that from the devil does proceed;
It drains your purse, it burns your clothes,
and makes a chimney of your nose”
BENJAMIN WATERHOUSE

31st May every year we mark World No Tobacco Day. It is done to highlight the health and additional risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

WHO theme for World No Tobacco Day this year is “Tobacco  a threat to development.”

90% of the total cases of Lung Cancer result due to smoking. We all know that, along with the fact that 1 out of 7 people who smoke 2 or more packets of cigarettes die due to Lung Cancer. There are also the countless images and videos, easily available, which present the horrifying state of a smoker’s lungs. In such a scenario, it almost always bemuses a non-smoker or a non-addict that most smokers still continue with the deadly habit. However, to be fair to those trying to quit, quitting is not half as easy as may be presumed by the non-addict.

The National Cancer Institute recommends these five steps be a part of every successful plan to quit smoking:

  • Set a quit date – Prepare Psychologically
  • Tell family, friends, and coworkers you plan to quit.
  • Anticipate and plan for the challenges you will face while quitting.
  • Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car and workplace.
  • Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.- Try non drug therapies like CBT, Counselling, Accupressure etc. If these don’t work consult a Lung Specialist and get medication for those crucial days when relapse is most likely to occur. Don’t let a relapse discourage you
